Mrs. Adrienne Maddox Hayling
(affectionately known as "Mom") age 88,
of Trenton, New Jersey and Martha's Vineyard
passed away on September 13, 2018
Born and educated in Washington, DC, Mrs. Hayling graduated from the renowned Dunbar High School before attending the District of Columbia Teacher's College and Howard University. She participated in numerous civic organizations throughout the years, including The Heart Association, Mercer County Park Commission, Human Relation Council, Greater Trenton Symphony Association Board, Friends of New Jersey State Museum, New Jersey State Library Board, NJ Supreme Court District V Ethnics Committee, Old Barracks Association Board, Tren-MOSC Board, Greater Mercer County Chamber of Commerce Board, Trenton Board of Education , President of Trustees- Trenton Free Public Library, The Board of Helene Fuld Medical Center (Chairman), Mrs, Hayling was the first Chairman of the Board of the Capital Health System and the first Black woman to be the Chairman of the Board of a hospital system in the entire country. She was involved in several social clubs, which included the Links, Inc. and several Bridge Clubs. Mrs, Hayling had received numerous awards and accolades, including the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Trenton Alumnae Chapter's "Humanitarian Award", Links, Inc.'s "50- Year Platinum Award" (recognizing her "Distinguished Service and Continuing Contributions to Improving the Quality of Life"), Mercer County Chamber of Commerce's "Ask A Busy Person" Awards, NAACP's Community Service Award, and YWCA of Trenton's "Meta Griffith Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service."
She was a woman of many talents who loved to entertain her family and friends. She hosted delightful gatherings at her homes in Trenton and Martha's Vineyard for many decades. With a warm and genuine smile. She has mentored countless people; from all walks of life, the value of self-discipline, a confident positive attitude and a basic plan.
She was respected and loved.
A portion of the parlor floor has been renovated into an upscale gallery for cosmopolitan art, music & culture.
The gallery, named in her honor, was home since 1989. Mrs. Hayling lived in this home that she shared with her husband Dr. Leslie A. Hayling Sr.,a Tuskegee Airman and prominent city dentist and their son Dr.Leslie A. Hayling Jr., DDS.
This four story and elegant Victorian brownstone is a historically registered mansion across the street from
New Jersey’s State Capital Plaza.
Beautiful and pristine the building is a transformational blend of the old with the new into an organic cultural space that features a great view of the state’s planetarium, museum, library and state auditorium along with the scenic background of the Delaware River’s tree line.
